First Course: RESEARCH!
Competition shows are all the rage these days, and the Culinary world is no exception. Cutthroat Kitchen, Chopped, Iron Chef (the granddaddy of them all!), Cupcake Wars, Top Chef, Throwdown with Bobby Flay...even KIDS are getting in on the action!
Food Network is the undisputed champion of competitive cooking shows, offering more than a dozen series that pit home cooks and professional chefs against one another under extreme limits of time and resources. We'll meet with the Advanced Culinary Team to hear about the competition and timeline--take notes! Teams will introduce themselves and you'll be assigned to one. It's your job to come up with a creative presentation for their segment. To better understand how you will BUILD your Episode of Café Wars for our advanced Culinary Arts Program, you must first DECONSTRUCT an episode of "Chopped", a popular cooking show. You'll look at the Camera Techniques, Editing Techniques, Lighting and Audio Techniques, and Stylistic approach used in an episode of "Chopped", a popular competitive show that pits professional chefs against one another. |
Second Course: Pre-Production
Before you can plan, you need to choose your Job on the Team:
Then, you'll use your arsenal of pre-production tools (Script, Storyboard, Shot List, Calendar) to plan and design your segment, based on the conversations you have during the Client meeting. |

Third Course: Production! We have an extremely limited time frame and kitchen access for shooting this project. Once they're done cooking----they're done! You should plan to overshoot--in other words, shoot MORE than you think you're going to need. Deploy your Camera and Audio teams for full coverage, and let your Script Supervisor know what "extra" footage you manage to pick up. It's going to be busy and hectic in that kitchen. Professional behavior is mandated at all times! No unsafe/inattentive behavior will be tolerated.
