Then, we'll grab a snack and head out to the open classroom area to discuss your potential topics for the Investigative Report. Bryan, Kanesha, Anjelica and Veronica---please stay in the lab to finish your Assignments from Wednesday. Everyone else, we will listen to each person's idea--without judgement--and ask questions to help them sharpen their focus for the project.

In addition to your regular duties this week, you must finish ALL 5 ASSIGNMENTS on the Investigative Report page; this includes choosing a topic and submitting it to me. Please read all directions for the assignments; incorrectly submitted work will be deleted.
If you were absent on Friday, you missed the opportunity to vote for our new slogan. The winner is "KJCN: The Eye of the Jaguar". Martha will add that into our opening graphics and closing credits.
We also started our "Investigative Reporting" Project. Take a look at the Project Page HERE. I'll work with Green Team, then Gold, to cover the basics of Investigative Reporting. You should have your topic chosen by Wednesday, March 9th. We need a SLOGAN for our show! Go to Socrative.com to vote for your favorite!
Then, it's time to put your Big Kid pants on. We're going to take on some heavy topics as we get started on your Investigative Reporting Project (see Syllabus at right for more info on Timeline). Go to our new page on Investigative Reporting to get started. GREEN TEAM: A&E Team and School News Team have places to go, people to see, and questions to ask today. See me after voting. GOLD TEAM: This is the REAL DEAL! Today you record your 1st Show as a Team. Good Luck!
GREEN TEAM: Your 1st Story Idea is due TODAY. Storyboard and Cover Shots/Resources list due tomorrow. You should start sending emails for any interviews. Cover footage and Stand-ups will be recorded on Wednesday. All work goes in Ana's binder. Thanks for doing such a great job with last Friday's assignment! During this short little week, we will transition to Rotation #4, with Interviews and Training. Click HERE for your new job.
Step 1: Interview your predecessor and note the Tasks and Responsibilities you must perform (in writing). Step 2: Write up your notes as a news article--Breaking News style---and answer the 5 W's about your story. Submit to me (10 points). Step 3: Hands-on Training; I will observe and quiz you to make sure you're prepared for your new job (5 points). Put your Reporter hat on! You'll be doing research today on famous African-Americans, and we will USE your research in daily announcements this month.
Pick up a copy of the handout from the Substitute. Write your name at the top. You will complete info on 10 famous African Americans by doing research on the internet. Write your answers on the handout; it's due by the end of class today.
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY! Note that you CANNOT have the same answers as anyone else sitting in your row! Here are some GREAT websites to get you started: 100 Famous African Americans of the 20th Century Biographies of Famous African Americans Great African American Biographies Black History Encyclopedia Brittanica's Guide to Black History You have 2 tasks to complete today. Read the directions completely before you begin.
For TODAY's assignment, you MUST choose a News Article that is COMPLETELY out of your usual area of interest---your "Comfort Zone"--and analyze the article. For example, if you usually focus on Sports, THIS TIME, choose Politics or Arts & Entertainment.
YOU MUST GET MY APPROVAL FOR THE ARTICLE BEFORE DOING THE ASSIGNMENT. To complete this Assignment:
Exercise: News Analysis Scan the page of the newspaper you have been given. Choose an article (must be a news item, not opinion column, horoscopes, advice column or ads) that you will use to complete this activity. 1. What is the topic of the article? 2. Who are the key people involved in the story? 3. List 3 key details about the story that are addressed in the article. 4. Who is the author of the article? 5. How could you make this story interesting to your AHAHS audience? Describe two ways you could make this story local and relevant. Choose one of the news articles from the LEFT SIDE COLUMN on CNN.COM .
Read and analyze the article (5 W's); write them on a new Word Document. Then, write a 5-sentence news announcement that relates the story to your local AHAHS Audience. You MUST write the story with information that makes the news interesting to locals. How does it affect their lives? Print and submit when done. |
